This type of art originally gained popularity during the Renaissance, when Old Masters such as Da Vinci and Holbein experimented with it. That is an example of anamorphic art, where the perspective of the drawing or painting is distorted in such a way that it has to be viewed from a certain angle - or reflected in a curved mirror - to appear realistic to the viewer.
